“The Hollywood Sign is an
international, iconic symbol that is recognized by hundreds of millions of
people worldwide. It symbolizes not only Hollywood, but it also embodies
people’s perception of California, the film and entertainment industries,
and the dreams of everyone who have enjoyed movies and television” says
VanCleave about his subject. VanCleave’s Hollywood Sign series is featured

Created for The Art Institute of
California – Hollywood from Hope Anderson’s 2009 documentary, “Under the
Hollywood Sign,” the 15-minute piece combines archival film and stills
with contemporary footage and interviews with such notables as Laura
Archera Huxley, Hugh Hefner and Bill Pullman.
The Hollywood Sign series by Ted
VanCleave was selected as the inaugural exhibit for The Gallery at The Art
Institute of California – Hollywood by President Gregory J. Marick. “Upon
first seeing his photography of the Hollywood Sign, I was awed by
VanCleave’s artistry, compelling me to contemplate the icon which I’ve
seen a thousand times before but which never before looked so fresh.”
Added Marick: The details, perspective, and colors come together in ways
which cast a new light on this familiar landmark – a fantastic creative
achievement worthy of celebration in The Gallery at The Art Institute of
California – Hollywood”.
